Riot Fest invaded Denver, Colorado for a second time over the third weekend of September. I was there in full force to cover the event for New Noise Magazine. My photographer and partner-in-crime, Jacki Vitetta and I had one hell of a weekend. We got chances to interview NEW FOUND GLORY, Spike from ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES & UKE-HUNT, Neil Fallon from Clutch, Andy Hull from MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA, Ross Hostage from ALLOUT HELTER, IN THE WHALE and Nostalghia! Not to mention the podcast interview with Steve Diggle from THE BUZZCOCKS! Check out those videos below!

Denver’s IN THE WHALE members Eric Riley and Nate Valdez sit down with Damian to talk their humble small town origins, moving to Denver, the secrets of their success and their new album: Eric. All that and MORE!

Welcome to your new favorite band.

In March of 2012, I found myself sitting on a Denver patio with my friend Haley day drinking massive amounts of PBR. Hours later and without much choice I found myself being whisked away to Fort Collins, Colorado for the annual FoCoMx festival. FoCoMx is a city wide music festival, very much in the vein of SxSw, only with a much larger emphasis on local, Colorado music.

I don’t remember the details of that night very clearly, but some how I ended up at the Astoria and was baptized by the explosive rock n roll of Denver’s IN THE WHALE. I’ve been following the band half-assed ever since, but it wasn’t until I found myself at the Bluebird interviewing Murder By Death’s Adam Trula that I once again witnessed the raw power and abandonment that is IN THE WHALE.

Not long after I reached out to members of the band about a possible interview and here is that mighty fine interview for you today!

We join Eric Riley and Nate Valdez at Illegal Pete’s on South Broadway in Denver. After bullshitting and enjoying a few delicious adult beverages, the band opens up about their early small town beginnings, how they discovered music in those small towns, finding each other in college at UNC in Greeley. We also talk about their move to Denver, taking the band serious, their secrets of success and their new EP: ERIC. All of that and more on this week’s Podcast!

Do not miss the band’s sure to be sold out album release party at the Larimer Lounge in Denver on November 22nd! For more information, please visit: http://www.larimerlounge.com/event_details.cfm?blogid=1178

Music featured on today’s episode includes: “34-28-32” from CAKE and “On a Roll” from the upcoming Eric.

46 – MURDER BY DEATH Interview! Adam Turla talks his love of survival novels, his affection for 80’s movies and how he learned how to create music!

Adam Turla from Murder By Death braved the flooding Colorado Landscape only to find himself in the company of this guy…

We’re BACK! After a short hiatus and a quick move to Denver, Colorado.. We’re back and better than ever! From now until the end of the year, expect a new episode every week!

This week we join Adam Turla from Murder By Death in the alleyway of The Bluebird Theater in Denver. It was Friday the 13th, and what a hell of a day. The Colorado landscape was ravaged by record breaking rainfall. Many people lost their homes and some even lost their lives due to the flooding. Many of the weekends events were cancelled or put on hold.

Many of those in attendance at the evenings show had themselves been displaced and were looking for distraction. Dedicated to their fan base, Murder By Death took what should have only been a ten hour drive from Salt Lake City to Denver and rerouted their trip all the way to Nebraska just to make it to the show!

We join Adam an hour later than scheduled for a short, but deep introspective on the musician’s early years. We focus on his early love of adventure books, 80’s films and learning to play & write music! Before we ended the conversation, we shift gears to also talk their connection to fans and their Kickstarter for BITTER DRINK, BITTER MOON!
