53 – IN THE WHALE’s Eric Riley & Nate Valdez talk about their humble small town origins, moving to Denver, the secrets of success, their new album ERIC and MORE!

Normally we would use this space to make a bad joke. With a photo this amazing, of IN THE WHALE drummer Eric Riley, no joke is needed!

Denver’s IN THE WHALE members Eric Riley and Nate Valdez sit down with Damian to talk their humble small town origins, moving to Denver, the secrets of their success and their new album: Eric. All that and MORE!

Welcome to your new favorite band.

In March of 2012, I found myself sitting on a Denver patio with my friend Haley day drinking massive amounts of PBR. Hours later and without much choice I found myself being whisked away to Fort Collins, Colorado for the annual FoCoMx festival. FoCoMx is a city wide music festival, very much in the vein of SxSw, only with a much larger emphasis on local, Colorado music.

I don’t remember the details of that night very clearly, but some how I ended up at the Astoria and was baptized by the explosive rock n roll of Denver’s IN THE WHALE. I’ve been following the band half-assed ever since, but it wasn’t until I found myself at the Bluebird interviewing Murder By Death’s Adam Trula that I once again witnessed the raw power and abandonment that is IN THE WHALE.

Not long after I reached out to members of the band about a possible interview and here is that mighty fine interview for you today!

We join Eric Riley and Nate Valdez at Illegal Pete’s on South Broadway in Denver. After bullshitting and enjoying a few delicious adult beverages, the band opens up about their early small town beginnings, how they discovered music in those small towns, finding each other in college at UNC in Greeley. We also talk about their move to Denver, taking the band serious, their secrets of success and their new EP: ERIC. All of that and more on this week’s Podcast!

Do not miss the band’s sure to be sold out album release party at the Larimer Lounge in Denver on November 22nd! For more information, please visit: http://www.larimerlounge.com/event_details.cfm?blogid=1178

Music featured on today’s episode includes: “34-28-32” from CAKE and “On a Roll” from the upcoming Eric.

50 – RESTORATIONS interview! The band talk about what makes Philly Great, their early origins, and how scary it was to sign to Side One Dummy Records!

Restorations and an array of drumsticks at the 7Th Circle Music Collective in Denver, Colorado

Restorations and an array of drumsticks at the 7Th Circle Music Collective in Denver, Colorado

RESTORATIONS from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are our guests on this week’s Mostly Harmless! This week’s episode is sponsored by Illegal Pete’s and their Starving Artist Program!

Restorations have put out one of my favorite records of the year and I might have missed it if was not for the wonderful Jamie from Side One Dummy and their PR team finding me and sending me a copy of their newest album, LP2. Immediately I was blown away with their melding of Post-Punk Rock N Roll and indie rock, with a little pop-punk thrown in for flavor. I think of it as Hum meets Menzingers with a little bit of Helmet thrown in, but people think I am crazy with that description.

Killer tunes and killer men, we hung out outside the 7th Circle Music Collective and talked shop. Among the things we discuss on today’s episode, we talk about what makes the Philly scene so great, what it was like growing up in that world, weather or not the band believes in FATE. Not only that we talk with Jon and Dave about their old band, JENA BERLIN and how they are enjoying their current ride of popularity! All of this and MORE!!!

SPONSORED BY HIGH PLAINS COMEDY FESTIVAL! August 23- 24th in Denver, Colorado! http://www.highplainscomedyfestival.com

For years my former roommate, and Mostly Harmless Theme song composer: Jarrod Moore; has been singing the praises of stand up comedian Kyle Kinane. Jarrod and Kyle were fortunate enough to have worked together at a Los Angeles close captioning facility for Television shows. They would go see each other perform and became friendly.

Years go by and I hear about Kyle Kinane more and more from my friends across the country, but it wasn’t until Kyle’s performance at last year’s FEST in Gainesville, Florida that I finally took notice to the rising comedian. Quickly I fell in love with his self depreciating sense of humor, and his love of late night drunken food. We are kindred spirits.

For those of you not familiar with Kyle, he is the voice of Comedy Central. He’s also had a critically acclaimed stand up special on the channel called: Whiskey Icarus, that aired earlier this year. You may have even caught him in his star making appearance on episode #2 of Comedy Central’s DRUNK HISTORY, in which Kinane attempts to tell the tale of the Haymarket Riots. Kinane has also made appearances on Conan O’Brien, as well as opened many shows for Patton Oswalt.

Today we join Kyle in the greenroom of Comedy Works in Denver. We sit back and chat about becoming a “Punk Rock” comedian of sorts, his D.I.Y. roots as well as his discovery of music and comedy all in one swoop. Not only that, we talk about BMX, Drinking, his failed Comedy Central pilot and oh so much more!

08 – BRENDAN KELLY of THE LAWRENCE ARMS talks the new Lawrence Arms album, The Wandering Birds album and Fatherhood.

Let's just stop and admire how handsome Brendan Kelly is. Sweet jesus is he a pretty man.

Let’s just stop and admire how handsome Brendan Kelly is. Sweet Jesus is he a pretty man.

Brendan Kelly is an asshole, but he’s my kind of asshole. Today we catch up with Brendan in Denver, Colorado. He’s been here in the state visiting his wife’s family. My new buddy, Zach Lowery was kind enough to allow us to use his office space for the interview. He works for the mighty fine Malenke|Barnhart graphic design agency and formerly ran Grey Flight Records.

We sit down with a somewhat inebriated Brendan Kelly. We were short on time, but i managed to squeeze out information on The Wandering Birds, the new Lawrence Arms album, and his new found life as a stay at home parent. I would have loved to talk about the feature film he made, and his acting career, but we’ll do that next time. This guy does not shut up!

Brendan writes a pretty damned great blog called The Bad Sandwhich Chronicles. It provides hours, and hours of entertainment. Much of the blog is about his family life, but he’s known to go off on some pretty incredible tangents. I highly recommend reading it!

We open the show up with “Great Lakes/Great Escapes,” which in retrospect I think its actually a Chris song, but with the dueling vocals, I’m not to sure. Plus the song kicks ass. We end the episode with “A Man with The Passion of Tennessee Williams,” off Brendan’s upcoming Wandering Birds release.
